Description Press cuttings: “Personal: 1908 to”. Press cuttings album mainly containing news paper reports on the attempt by Sir Charles Cayzer to win the seat for Newport in the General Election of January 1910. The album begins shortly after he is adopted as the Unionist candidate in July 1908. Much of the album contains the meetings he attended, and the speeches he made at those meetings, together with notices of events hosted by Lady Cayzer and the speeches she made in his support. There are various cartoons and photographs of Sir Charles, and also press photographs of members of his family (Lady Cayzer; Charles Cayzer mislabelled as Sir Charles Cayzer; Mamie Vereker; Bertie Cayzer; and Louie Cayzer). There is one real photograph of Lady Cayzer among a group of other dignitaries at the opening of a Newport Fete in 1908 (iin addition to the photographs printed in the papers). Some other cuttings including a note on Admiralty promotions in 1908, which includes Admiral Jellicoe; and a note on the imminent marriage of Harold Cayzer with Kitten Dudgeon. The album ends at the end of the campaign, but there are no cuttings about the outcome of the election (Sir Charles did not win the seat). One constant theme throughout the election campaign is the employment of "foreign" workers on British ships, at the expense of employment for British workers. Sir Charles admitted openly that he employed Lascars, and pointed out that these were British subjects. However this point was returned to many times by his opponents. Enclosed: letters [9], 1909-1910, to Sir Charles Cayzer re the election, and condolences on defeat, to be moved to CAY/FP/1
