Description Press cuttings: “Political from 1 July [19]08”. Containing a mixture of political and personal cuttings. Album begins with cuttings regarding Sir Charles Cayzer's adoption as Unionist candidate at Newport to fight the election in 1910. Cuttings follow this campaign (these should be read in conjunction with those in CAY/FP/6/9) . The campaign culminates with a luncheon given to Sir Charles by the Conservative Association of Newport in April 1910 to thank him for his efforts (he did not win the election), and presenting him with a silver casket containing an address, and adorned with painted plaques, including one of the house he had taken while resident in Newport, Brynglas House. The menu for the luncheon is also pasted in. Personal cuttings throughout the album include: report on hunter trials at Coedkernew, November 1908, in which Bertie competed with two horses, Flashlight (who bolted), and Daylight, who "did well as a light-weight hunter"; large article about Gartmore, May 1909, reprinted in the Monmouthshire Evening Post, from the Scottish Field; exhibition of portrait of Sir Charles Cayzer, by Walter Ouless, May 1909; report on the Sailors' Orphan Society of Scotland, of which Sir Charles was president, May 1909; an obituary notice for Arthur Cayzer, from The Scotsman, June 1909; pp57-65 are devoted to cuttings about the wedding of Bertie and Freda Rathborne on 18th January 1911. The cuttings include sketches of the bride's wedding and going-away outfits, and the bridesmaids' outfit. There is one photograph of Freda with her bridal attendants - her sisters Evelyn and Adrian Rathborne, Bertie's nieces Estelle Cayzer and Eileen and Doreen Vereker, two other young girls, Angela and Marjorie Forbes, and trainbearers Charles Madden(II) and Betty Jellicoe, published in "Madame" 28th January 1911. [Betty died 24th January 1911]; account of the collision of the Le Nord with the Lockwood (1912) undated but described as an account by "a well-known Liverpool shipowner" to his son; launch of the Clan Macewen, 1912; announcements of Scottish estates for sale (incuding Ballikinrain) 1912; notices of the publication of a new poem "Donna Marina" by Charles Cayzer (III), July 1913; United Services Gazette front page 9th January 1913, with profile of Vice-Admiral Sir John Jellicoe, including photographic portrait (this front page repeated almost verbatim on the front of the United Services Gazette, 13th August 1914); various press reports of the opening of the Kinpurnie Golf Course, 28th July 1913, including photographs of Sir Charles and Lady Cayzer, son Charles(II) and wife, and grandson Charles Cayzer(IV); exhibition of marble bust of Sir Charles Cayzer by Miss [Margaret] Wrightson, 4th May 1913; news story that Sir Charles Cayzer has nine relatives serving in the armed forces, August 1914 [three sons, two sons-in-law, two grandsons, and two nephews]; Lady Jellicoe opening "Tipperary Rooms", 1915; purchase of the remainder of the Ralston estate (all that Sir Charles did not already own), May 1915, together with press clipping suggesting that the purchase of large tracts of land by a shipowner in wartime was due to profiteering on freight; other cuttings reporting movements and activitiesof Sir Charles and Lady Cayzer as they travelled abroad or round Britain. Includes a report of the death of Sir George Doughty in April 1914. Includes loose page from Barrow newspaper "The Herald" 8th June 1907, containing report of presentation of a silver casket containing an address, to Sir Charles in appreciation of his 14 years service as MP for the borough. The verso of the page contains the speeches in full. This page is particularly fragile, being torn and acidic.
