Family Tree

The Cayzer Family Tree concentrates on the family and descendants of Sir Charles Cayzer, 1st Bt Gartmore (1843-1916). In addition to his wider family, Sir Charles and his wife had 10 children, of whom nine survived to adulthood, and eight had children of their own.  In total, Sir Charles had over 30 grandchildren.

The Cayzer family name originates in Cornwall where generations of Cayzers worked on the land, mainly in the parish of St Mawgan in Pydar, and many Cayzer families have entries in the early parish registers.  It took the great leap from Cornwall to Devon of one Cayzer in the late 1700s, and a second bolder leap by his son, a dissenting minister, the Reverend John Cayzer, to London in the 1810s, for the future Sir Charles, grandson of the Rev. Cayzer, to be born in Poplar, a working class area, where his family lived, and his father, the first Charles William Cayzer, was a schoolmaster.
